Sierra Maestra Tour

Please note: Sierra Maestra tour has been dropped from UK until further notice. Please refer to Classical Cuba Tour if you wish to take a tour in Cuba.

The Sierra Maestra Tour will take you on the trail of Che Guevara where you will follow Che’s trail into the Sierra Maestra Mountains, see where he hid out during the revolutionary war to free Cuba from the constraints of Batista’s rule and the colonisation of America. You will also visit Santiago de Cuba , the birthplace of the revolutionary movement. The Sierra Maestra Mountains provided Fidel Castro and Che Guevara a headquarters during the revolution at Commandancia de la Plata which was their famous hideout deep in the jungle under a thick canopy of trees hidden from all eyes. The Sierra Maestra Mountains are also a haven for rare animals such as Pygmy Owls and butterflies with invisble wings so excellent for those who wish to see flaura and fauna at its best.

DAY 1 – Arrival

Fly from your UK departure to airport to Holguin. 2 nights stay at the Pinares de Mayari Hotel which is and ecological haven with stunning views in the hills of La Mensura National Park

DAY 2 – Exploration Day

Your first stop is the Scientific Research Station in the Nipe Highlands where you will enjoy a nature trail before visiting the Guayabo waterfall. Lunch is not included.

DAY 3 – Bayamo and the Sierra Maestra Mountains

Heading straight for the Sierra Maestra Mountains you stop off at Bayamo for Lunch. You can explore Bayamo Cathedral and Parque Cespedes. Spend the night at Villa Santa Domingo in natural and tranquil surroundings in the heart of the Sierra Maestra mountains.

DAY 4 – Hike to La Plata

After breakfast, you will be picked up by an off road vehicle before trekking to La Plata, the headquaters of Fidel Castro during the Revolution. Then it is back to the Hotel for Dinner.

DAY 5 – Santiago de Cuba

Visit El Cobre Sanctuary before heading to Santiago de Cuba where you will see the Moncada Barracks and Bacardi Museum. Your accommodation is in the Hotel Versalles for 2 nights which is in a quiet hilltop setting overlooking Santiago de Cuba with spectacular views.

DAY 6 – La Gran Piedra and El Morro Castle

In the morning you will visit La Gran Piedra stopping at a botanical garden and a coffee plantation on the way. After Lunch you will visit El Morro Castle, a 17th century fortress.

DAY 7 – Guardalavaca Beach Hotels

After breakfast, you will head to your beach hotel in the Guardalavaca area. Lunch in Mayabe is included.

Each day of the sierra maestra tour is full board basis unless otherwise stated. The tours operate on 14 night durations only from Guardalavaca and with a minimum of 6 passengers. Luggage allowance is 20kg per person. This tour is not recommended for children and may not be suitable for elderly guests or guests with walking difficulties as there is a lot of walking and some hikking involved.
