Landing on the outskirts of Holguin City at Frank Pais Airport, transfers to the City of Holguin are approximately 20 minutes and to the All Inclusive Hotels and resorts on the northern coast of Holguin Province take approximately 1 hour.
Holguin City is famous for it’s profusion of beautiful parks. The city is built in blocks including straight but narrow streets in the oldest part of the City that all lead to many of the Public Squares. Places of interest are the Museum of History and the Museum of Natural Science, the San Isidoro Cathedral which dates back to the 18th Century, and the San Jose church which was built in 1815, the house in which Calixto Garcia who was one of the most important General’s of Cuba’s War of Independence was born which is now a Museum, Cruz (Cross) Hill which is what the local’s refer to as the ‘lookout point’ and which you can reach either by road or by climbing the 458 steps and Marqueta Square Cultural Centre which has a print shop and exhibit and sales area for handycrafts, works of art and books. There are also cabarets, night clubs and restaurants and a wide variety of shops.
There is close to 25 miles (40km) of stunning coastline in the Holguin Province where you will find some of the very best beaches that Cuba has to offer and is where Christopher Columbus first set foot on this beautiful Caribbean Island.
The All Inclusive Hotels are in the Guardalavaca region of the Holguin Province with it’s stunning white beaches and cyrstal clear warm turquoise water which is very calm and safe for swimming as it is protected by nearby coral reefs. The beaches are bordered by thick vegetation which is typical of the province and there are 12 wildlife refuges.
Activities at Playa Esmerelda Beach include swimming, sailing lessons, scuba diving, snorkelling and other water sports, horseback riding, you can also go on excursions along the coast and inland, visit farmer’s houses and go cycling. At Guardalavaca Beach, activities include swimming, scuba diving, snorkelling, other water sports, beach volleyball, tennis, excursions on yachts horseback riding, cycling and hiking. These beaches are Public beaches and the local people do use them frequently, there is a laid back and relaxing atmosphere with background music from the seafood beach stalls offering snacks and drinks. Playa Pesquero beach is in it’s own little bay and serves the 4* plus Playa Pesquero Resort, 4* Playa Costa Verde Hotel and 3* Blau Costa Verde Hotel. Playa Pesquero Resort is beachfront whereas the Playa Costa Verde and Blau Costa Verde access to the beach is from a path from the Hotels.
Nearby Naranjo Bay (in a natural park) offers sealion and dolphin shows in it’s aquarium and you also have the opportunity to swim with the dolphins, you can take a seafari, air tours along the shoreline, deep sea and surface fishing. Naranjo Bay is by far the best and most natural environment to swim with Dolphins in Cuba.
The Chorro de Matia Archaeological digs which is the largest aboriginal cemetery in the Antilles that has been found to date is also in the area with a restored Taino Indian Village nearby. The Barajay National Monument Park is where Christopher Columbus first set foot on Cuban Soil and celebrates a meeting of Indian and European cultures that took place over 5 centuries ago. The town of Banes is called the archaelogical capital of Cuba and is the site of the Bani Indo-Cuban Museum which has exhibits of artifacts used by the island’s first inhabitants.
Cayo Saetia, which is referred to by tour operators as ‘Paradise Island’ and is located to the east near the broad Bay of Nipe, is available as an excursion from Hotels reached by a coach to the Port Antilla of and then an all inclsuive catamaran. Cayo Saetia is 16 square miles (423 square km) and 65% of it is covered with forests. An excursion to Cayo Saetia offers horseback riding or a mini safari through the meadows where you will see ostriches, antelope, zebra, deer, wild boar, water buffalo, American Bison all who roam free on the island.
Gibara is a quiet picturesque fishing village and port with interesting colonial architechture, a Museum of Colonial Ambiance and a Museum of Natural Sciences which shows an extremely good collection of butterflies. In Gibara there are also some of the best seafood restaurants with freshly caught produce available.
